The British Slavery Bailout

Image

Since I have ancestry from Jamaica and Grenada, was born in England  and lived in Canada and America, I have a tendency to think of the black experience as global. The English are known for their obsessive record keeping and lately they have been using these resources to examine the scope of the empires involvement in the institution of chattel slavery. A database will be available this Wednesday that details how much British slave owners were paid to compensate them for their loss of property. Slaves did not get a farthing and were compelled into indentured slavery scheme that was one step up from slavery. The documents indicate that at least 1/5 one-fifth of wealthy Victorian Britons derived all or part of their fortunes from the slave economy.

Current descendants of slave compensation include Prime Minister, David Cameron, former minister Douglas Hogg, authors Graham Greene and George Orwell, poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning, and the new chairman of the Arts Council, Peter Bazalgette. Other prominent names which feature in the records include scions of one of the nation’s oldest banking families, the Barings, and the second Earl of Harewood, Henry Lascelles, an ancestor of the Queen’s cousin. Some families used the money to invest in the railways and other aspects of the industrial revolution; others bought or maintained their country houses, and some used the money for philanthropy. George Orwell’s great-grandfather, Charles Blair, received £4,442, equal to £3m today, for the 218 slaves he owned.

I for one cannot wait to see, how much my ancestors were worth. My mother”s maiden name is Dawkins. Her father’s family was owned by the family that produced world famous atheist and pompous ass, Richard Dawkins. In it’s hayday the Dawkins’ owned over 1,000 slaves. Dawkins’ MP ancestor James Dawkins voted against Wilberforce’s proposal to abolish the slave trade, helping to defeat it by just four votes. George Hay Dawkins Pennant was another defiant slavery supporter. In 1831, two years before the act abolishing slave ownership in the Empire, he signed a circular which insisted: “the speedy annihilation of slavery would be attended with the devastation of the West India Colonies … with inevitable distress and misery to the black population.'” What an arrogant sod!

“Cousin” Richard claims he doesn’t benefit from slavery since he only has “400 acre country estate which barely makes a profit.” I can’t wait for more arrogant excuses from those who still benefit from the ill gotten gains of slavery and indentured servitude. You may ask why do I call this man “cousin.” The Consolidated Slave Act 1792 rewarded slave owners and overseers who increased their slave stock. The easiest way to do this was to was to supply your own seed. Rape and concubinage was rampant in the Caribbean, the diary of Thomas Thistlewood’s sexual escapades detail the sexual brutality that black female slaves lived under. How does one amass such a large amount of slave without doing your duty for King and Country? The database will be available at the  Legacies of British Slave-ownership website on 27 February 2013.

CDC: African-American women less likely to get mammograms | wtsp.com

CHECK THOSE BOOBIES, SISTERS!!!

The number of patients dying from breast cancer is on the decline… that’s the good news.

The bad news is there’s still a large gap between black and white women in terms of mortality and when one is diagnosed.

Those are the findings of a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Black women still have a disproportionately higher breast cancer death rate: 41 percent higher than white women.

The report suggests a link between the high mortality rate and data showing black women less frequently use mammography than white women.

Black Caribbean workers ‘earned more per hour than whites before recession’ | The Guardian

Black Caribbean workers received the biggest pay rises on average during the pre-recession boom years, earning more per hour than their white peers by 2008, according to new research.

Researchers from the University of Essex say that although the gap between the hourly pay of white people and those from ethnic minorities as a whole more than doubled in the 15 years to 2008, there were marked differences between groups.

In an article published in the latest edition of the journal Work, Employment and Society, Essex University’s Malcolm Brynin and Ayse Güveli analysed more than 650,000 results from the UK’s large-scale quarterly Labour Force Survey.

Racist Posts Tied to West Indian Parade Bring Police Dept. Discipline – NYTimes.com

New York has the oldest and one of the largest populations of Caribbean Americans in the country. Every year West Indians from all over to world come to New York City on Labor Day to celebrate our rich history and culture. Things can get out of hand, but mostly it is just a gathering of hundreds of thousands of folks enjoying themselves. That many people in one place often stirs up white panic, even though St. Patrick’s Day parades can get just as or even more raucous. The police have been at the forefront of this anti-black phobia and attribute every crime committed by a black or Hispanic person to the parade. Last year they went too far and to many’s surprise they got punished for it. This year perhaps the Big Apple’s “Finest” can leave their bigotry at home and actually work to serve and protect the West Indian members of New York City.

Nearly 20 employees of the New York Police Department have faced discipline in connection with the posting of racist or derogatory comments on a Facebook page about revelers at the 2011 West Indian American Day Parade, a heavily policed annual celebration in Brooklyn on Labor Day weekend. The comments referred to “savages” and “animals,” and one poster wrote, “Let them kill each other.” The Facebook page, titled “No More West Indian Day Detail,” elicited comments from more than 150 people, many of whose names matched those of police officers.
The department’s chief spokesman, Paul J. Browne, said 17 people had since been disciplined; four of those are officers facing pending departmental trials on charges of “conduct prejudicial to the good order of the Police Department,” he said. Mr. Browne said that seven had received the department’s lowest level of punishment, the equivalent of a reprimand. Six others received what is known as a command discipline — a punishment that sometimes entails a loss of up to 10 vacation days.

Scientific Racism at Forbes Magazine: The DNA Olympics — Jamaicans Win Sprinting ‘Genetic Lottery’

Forbes is a magazine for wealthy white business people. Even though they are not as blatantly racist as National Review they have come up with some extremely biased doozies like If I was a Poor Black Kid, which inspired a furious backlash and great memes. Forbes doubled down with this mess from a whiny white guy who assumes his inability to reach impoverished black children is because they are all criminally ignorant and not really poor.

Their latest dip into the pool of white elitism is an insult the Olympians of the Caribbean, Africa and Africans Americans athletes by retreading the racially biased pseudobiology that held away in America and Europe after slavery and only began to die after the Holocaust. Scientific racism never seems to completely die out and John Entine one of the most vocal proponent contents that blacks are simply better for running. This nonsense seems even more ridiculous due to the availably of DNA analysis. 70% African Americans have white ancestry and about 15% have Native American ancestry. Those few whose genetic contributions that hail completely from Africa are an admixture of numerous ethnic groups. Caribbean people are more mixed with the aboriginal people of the islands, the shortage of white women in the West Indies and the white colonial aristocracy’s tendency to breed their own “stock.” After emancipation some of the South Asian indentured servants married black natives.
Most Jamaicans simply consider themselves Jamaicans. Colorism may be an issue but race isn’t I have Jamaican maternal linage that is white, South Asian and African. You can look at a pictures of the Olympic team and see the variation. Why do racists like you deny the fact that the average person of a different race can be more similar genetically than two people of the same race? Why do racists deny that Africa has the greatest genetic variation on the planet and skin color varies throughout the continent?
Black people have made headway in “traditionally white” sports like golf, fencing, tennis swimming, diving, water polo and gymnastics, how does this racist twaddle explain that? Individual, genetics, opportunity, resources and hard work make a good athlete. This post started as a comment on this fact that this racist tripe still gets publicized as fact. My post was magically removed. I posted it again lets see if it is jettisoned into the ozone again by the author of this trash. Come on, John Entine, put scientific racism in the dustbin of history next to eugenics where it belongs. For more detailed discussion on how wrong this Entine character is check out Resurrecting Racism: The attack on black people using phony science.

London 2012: Black Locals Feel Forgotten

Wightman Road, Haringey, London, UK

The Borough of Haringey,  where me and my sister was born, is an area considered one of the most deprived areas in all of Britain. More than half of its 250,000-plus residents are ethnic minorities. But as the Olympics go on across town, Finsbury Park’s run-down sports center faces shutdown. The local council says it can’t pay for the center’s upkeep and is considering handing it over to a consortium of sports clubs that may not offer round-the-clock access. That worries Johnson and his friends, a group of older men, most of them from immigrant families, who gather daily to do punishing circuit training on the track and in the bare-bones gym. In between circuits, they joke and catch up on life. “They should have done this place up for the Olympics,” says Johnson, who is now 57. “We don’t get a lot out of the games at all.”

Happy 50th Anniversary Jamaica!

My mother instilled a great deal of Jamacian pride into her daughters. She made sure that we visted the country as children, taught us our history and always pointed out the accomplishments of the Jamaican diaspora. Read about how this tiny island became known world wide.
