Kenyan top model Ajuma campaigns against skin lightening cosmetics

When black women discuss the epidemic of skin blacking someone always chimes in with the derailing tactic of “Asian women have the same problem.” Can we talk about our own issues without someone demanding we mammy it up and care more about other folks concerns that we do for ourselves??? Find me an article from an Asian or South Asian blog where they are talking about black women’s issues and then I will consider making room. Besides Asian women have an opportunity that few black women do they can out marry. Asian women have the higher ration of out marriage per population in America, black women the least. Ajuma Nasenyana is Kenya’s Top model and she has a message that we need to hear.

“Besides Asian women have an opportunity that few black women do they can out marry. Asian women have the higher ration of out marriage per population in America, black women the least.”

    How is this even relevant?

It is relevant because black women rarely get to talk about our own issues without being defamed or derailed. We are called selfish when we focus on ourselves, when women of other racial & ethnic backgrounds regularly leave us out of the equation. We suposed to be the mammy or the black best friend and I rebuke that nonsense!

I rebuke it also. But you missed my point. What does “marrying out” have to do with skin-lightening? I find the blatant sexism more offensive. The subliminal message here is non-white women whom loathe their heritage have two options. Marry white OR lighten your skin. Really!!! !
Have we no self- worth? And, as usual, we get distracted with the racial cat fight when the gender assault is most egregious.
So let’s take the worst case scenario. You marry out and lighten your skin. How does that address the underlying problem: self-hatred.

You are so right. The slew of “educated black women can find a mate” articles only add to that self hatred. It is heartbreaking to look at Mother Africa and Caribbean and note that the hard earned dollars of black women are going to this toxic process.

On another note, when have black women ever been at a loss for words. Speak up! We dont need anyone to do advocate for us…not unless you’re a mammy.
