Black & Brown Nerd Ladies Unite

Nobody Ever Told Me A Black Woman Wasn’t Supposed to Love Sci Fi .

I have been a nerd all my life. One of the first movies I can remember seeing is Dr. Who and the Dalecks. When I go to my favorite academic convention, I always go to some sci fi/fantasy panels for fun. I am often greeted with wonderment, even by black men. I had had to correct a Japanese women who did a presentation on Parable of the Sower without any knowledge of the crack epidemic that inspired it. I told a tenured professor who did a presentation on images of Frankenstein about Black Frankenstein. If I was white and male, these comments would be welcomed as interesting feedback as a black woman I piss people off. I  do know about Mordor, Narnia or the number of planets who can admit students to the Battle School. Nerdom needs become a safe space for me and my black and brown sisters because our numbers are getting bigger and bigger.
